Kunbi Saree : Goa's heritage

The Kunbi saree is a symbol of the Kunbi tribe’s rich heritage and craftsmanship. The saree’s origins date back to before the Portuguese arrived in Goa. The Kunbi tribe were mainly farmers who cultivated rice and owned paddy fields. The saree’s short length allowed women to perform household chores and agricultural work without getting their clothes dirty. The Kunbi saree is a traditional saree with a plain body and an intricately woven border and pallu, all dyed in natural colours. The women would wear the saree, typically draped closer to the knee, while working in paddy fields.
With progress and education, people of this tribe took to other jobs and occupations which resulted in a significant decline in agrarian activities. This has led to the Kunbi saree being almost relegated to history.
